Welcome to the 2017 Cricket Finland umpires' refresher course. This course contains all that is needed for individuals to fulfil the Cricket Finland requirements to umpire matches in the 2017 season. The course does not go through all the laws and regulations applicable in Finland, but is meant to deal with areas of interest. Cricket Finland assumes that course participants have a certain knowledge of umpiring beforehand, gained through experience umpiring in Finland and through taking Cricket Finland umpiring courses in the past.
The course will be given through the page and consists of required reading provided by the ECB and the Cricket New Zealand Umpires' and Scorers' Association. In order to pass this course, a participant must take the quiz at the bottom of this page and pass with a mark of 60%. Obviously we cannot guarantee that participants will read all of the material covered in this course, but we highly recommend it, to prepare oneself to umpire in Finland.
To be eligible to take this course you must have done the following:
1. Completed an ICC approved course in the past.
2. Completed another Cricket Finland course in the last 2 years.
If you have taken any of the Cricket Finland courses given in 2017 or the ICC course in October you do not have take this course.
Umpires wanting to stand this year, must pass the exam with a passing grade of 60% by May 21st, 2017. If you fail you will get the opportunity to take the exam again. This will be given to those who did not pass after May 21, 2017 and should be completed by June 5, 2017. Umpires can stand in the matches up to May 21, 2017 without passing the exam, but need to pass after this date to be eligible to umpire after this.
In order to best follow this course, it is best done on a laptop or desktop computer. The Cricket Finland website is not optimised for mobile devices.
The course should take about 3 hours to complete if all material is read.

This module deals with the Spirit of Cricket, which is the foundation in which the game is played. A general understanding of the Spirit of Cricket and what it stands for and what is required is key starting point for anyone playing the game. This module asks the participants to read through the Spirit of Cricket as provided on the MCC website and to watch the Cowdrey Lecture given by Kumar Sangakara, former captain of Sri Lanka discussing what the sport of cricket means to him.

Law 42 deals with specific cases of unfair play and the captains and umpires responsibilities when these occur. This module asks participants to read and watch the MCC's presentation on Law 42.

When umpires are concentrating on getting LBW's or caught behinds right, you might forget that the most common error made umpires is miscounting the amount of balls. This Law deals with what happens when an umpire miscounts along with all other details about when an over starts and ends.

Always a good thing to refresh, since there are many times in the game that this law is applied. Focus especially on the foot no-balls, on no-balls for bouncers and for height. It will definitely come up in any match you umpire. Remember in Finland, there is a free-hit for all no-balls, except when the ball pitches off the mat or on the edge of the mat.

Being an umpire is not only about knowing and applying the laws, it is also about being an independent and respected judge of how the game is played. Looking the part and communicating with your colleague is key to being a successful. An umpire also needs to know what to do when things go wrong and where to report. This module deal with all these topics.

Exam
Now it is time to test your knowledge and what you have learnt. The final exam consists of 20 questions, dealing various topics addressed above. It is not difficult, but these are things that will come up in each and every match that you umpire in. A good knowledge of the laws and playings regulations is a minimum requirement to be a successful umpire.
To pass you need to get 16 questions right. All questions have the same weight. Please insert your email, when you complete Your result will appear when you complete the exam. All questions need to answered.
Umpires wanting to stand this year, must pass the exam with a passing grade of 60% by May 21, 2017. If you fail you will get the oppurtunity to take the exam again. This will be given to those who did not pass after May 21, 2017 and should be completed by June 5, 2017.
