11 March 2012... "Crack of dawn". Helsinki Western Port. This is a historic moment. The first-ever international cricket trip for Finnish Girls and Women as a team is about to start. The destination is Tallinn, Estonia - across the Gulf of Finland in Northern Europe. The team comprised of four 15yo girls (Katariina, Amanda, Marika and Manna), who had a few years of cricket behind them - and four more mature female cricketers (Johanna, Ronja, Tarja and Anna), also mostly very new to the game, having been involved for a year or so. Travelling with us was our coach and manager, the ‘tigermama’ Maija, the umpire of the tour Jari, who had travelled overnight from Tampere to be there, and the support team: Ted, Jaana, Curt, and Anu. With this fabulous group of unshakable pioneers of female cricket in Finland, we set sail, feeling excited and a little nervous about the Finnish Ladies’ and Girls’ inaugural “cricket tour”... ... more soon !
