Cricket Finland (CF) are pleased to advise that we have finalised negotiations with VALO/YLE to deliver the first ever official Finnish Championship Indoor cricket tournament as part of the “SM-VIIKKO” multi-sports event to be held at the Tampere Exhibition Centre on February 12th to 14th 2016.
This is the first time such a prestigious combined sports event has been organised in Finland and it will include around 15 different sports in 2016. All of the sports that will be hosting Finnish Championship finals will have their final televised LIVE on YLE TV plus there will be match extracts and interviews shown on YLE throughout the spectacular event. We are proud to announce that the one hour long cricket final will be shown on YLE on Saturday evening February 13th! This is fantastic news for everyone involved in Finnish cricket and we aim to ensure it is a great success.
The CF Board have contracted with VALO/YLE to organise this 8-team cricket tournament based on our selection of rankings from summer 2015 official tournaments. In this case we concluded that the 8 teams selected would be the top 6 teams from SM40 Division 1, along with the winners of SM40 Division 2 and the winners of the SM T20 trophy. The list of clubs now being offered a place at the tournament are therefore the following:
2. Vantaa CC
3. Helsinki CC
5. Espoo CC
7. FinnAsia CC
8. Tampere CC
The SM cricket tournament will be played at the Tampere Exhibition Centre from Friday around midday until the final on Saturday evening. Squads will be 8 players with each match playing team consisting of 6 players. Each game will be scheduled to last a maximum of 60 minutes, timing which must be strictly followed due to the TV scheduling. There will be two groups of 4 teams, who will play each other once in the group with the top two teams in each group going forward to semi-finals. Games will start early Friday afternoon and continue until late Friday evening and then continue again on Saturday morning. Playing regulations and our need for umpires and scorers will be sent out shortly.
The tournament is being promoted nationally and is being supported strongly by VALO/YLE/OKM and other partners.
IMPORTANT PRACTICAL ITEMS:
The following items must all be in order BEFORE a team entry can be confirmed:
i. All previous payments due to Cricket Finland must have been settled before the tournament confirmation deadline
ii. Each team’s SM-Week entry fee will need to be paid by latest the first week of February (details will follow)
iii. All team’s players must hold a valid 2015 VALO cricket license
Each club needs to confirm participation to CF in writing by latest midday 1200 THURSDAY January 7th, but any earlier will be appreciated. So make sure your club replies by this date, then other clubs will be invited in your place immediately after this deadline. Don't miss out!
The chairman of Finn-Asia Cricket Association, Pasi Kankaanpää, has been elected to the Turku sports parliament, which is an expert panel of the city, representing the 300 sports associations and their 60.000 members in Turku. Proper management and close collaboration with the Turku sports officials resulted in the election, made by Turku's sport associations last month. Membership in the parliament is a big responsibility, and an indication that cricket and Finn-Asia are taken seriously in Turku. This is another small but positive achievement for cricket in Finland, and opens new possibilities for collaboration within various areas of sports.
Congratulations to Pasi, may this be the first of many such positions for Finnish Cricket!
After reviewing the numerous applicants for the position of LSC chair, the Cricket Finland board has chosen Shaun van den Dobbelsteen for the role. Shaun will work together with current chair Simon Uphill and other LSC members to ensure a smooth handover until Simon stands down end-November.
Shaun’s work will start immediately with the summer 2016 league scheduling project, so please make sure your club and committee members are active in replying to LSC emails due out soon – no replies and ignoring upcoming deadlines will mean no official cricket for your club next summer, so don’t miss out because you have nobody checking your club’s general email inbox!
Further decisions on expanding the LSC will follow shortly.
